How L1 and L2 CPU Caches Work

In the early decades of computing, main memory was extremely slow and incredibly expensive. CPUs weren’t particularly fast either; starting in 1978 with a whopping 1MHz clock speed! If a system is set-associative, it means that each block of cache can store any data located in main memory. The advantage to this type of organization scheme over one which uses an indexed file or lookup table structure is its high hit rate and quick look up times because there are no intermediate levels necessary between main memory storage locations and their implementations within our processor’s caching hierarchy; however searching through all blocks for something unknown may take longer when compared with fewer but more deeply nested hierarchies where slower caches must be traversed before reaching ones containing desired information

Direct-mapped caches are the fastest type of cache, but they have a low hit rate. N-way associative Caching means that each block in main memory can map to one or two cache locations which helps improve performance by keeping more data around for longer periods.

Why CPU Caches Keep Getting Larger

The thing is, each additional memory pool pushes back the need to access main memory and can improve performance in specific cases. This way you don’t have as many cache misses which means your application gets faster!

A lot of developers will argue against this idea by saying “why add continually larger caches?” or they’ll claim that increasing L2 bandwidth doesn’t always help because codes get slower instead (it depends).
